How To Improve English Vocabulary Skills

Having a significant amount of vocabularies in your arsenal is probably the most important thing in terms of learning a new language and communicating with ease. If you do not have enough words to express yourself through writing and speaking, the learner will have trouble getting his/her message across, and therefore, will be very difficult to make the listener understand what the speaker is trying to convey. Moreover, if you aren’t competent in English, you can communicate with other people by only using basic everyday words. However, when the time comes that you will communicate with native English speakers, and they are going to use higher forms of vocabularies, you will find yourself in a situation where it is difficult for you to understand what the speaker is trying to get across. Because of these, vocabulary is one of the most important things when you want to express yourself and be fully confident in speaking. So, how do we go about and improve a person’s vocabulary? Well, it doesn’t happen overnight. But, let’s go ahead and talk about on how we can build your vocabulary skills.

The Three Most Important Ways On How To Improve English Vocabularies

There are three important ways on how to improve English vocabulary. Firstly, the learner must be able to understand the meaning of the word while reading or listening. Secondly, it is important that the learner will be able to integrate the learned vocabularies into his long-term memory. Thirdly, the learner must be able to use the newly learned vocabulary through speaking and writing. Now, let’s talk next on how we can go about this so we can expand your vocabulary.

Read Books To Improve English Vocabularies

The first step in improving your vocabulary in English is to be exposed to English as often and as much as possible. The best way to do this is by reading books to improve your vocabulary. There are a lot of books that you can find nowadays from Ebooks, novels, newspapers, and more. If you read a lot of books, you get exposed to new words and phrases. In building vocabulary skills, simply try to write down new words that you have read onto a vocabulary notebook. Then, look for the meaning in the dictionary and try your best to understand on how it is used. Story books or short novels are one of the best reading resources out there that can help improve your vocabularies, simply because they are often interesting to the learner.

In addition, news articles or other articles in your niche of interest are also deemed useful to improve English vocabulary because there are a lot of articles on the web and its contents are updated daily. To find websites like these, simply try searching them on google using keywords like “Articles” “Website articles” or try to be more specific. If you’re interested in, let’s say, animals, you can google-search something about “articles about animals” and thousands of articles will be shown.

My recommended websites for reading are Voice of America, Ello.org, and BBC learning English. Voice of America is an excellent website to help improve English vocabularies because English learners can easily read a news article and follow along with the audio/podcast that is being played for you. Not only will English learners be able to practice their reading comprehension and learn English vocabularies, they could also improve their listening skills and English pronunciation. Elllo.org is also similar to that of Voice of America. It is a perfect resource to improve your English listening skills and learn new words. Methods On Studying English Vocabularies

Each English learner has their own method to study English vocabularies. Some prefer to do it the old-fashioned way and memorize hundreds of vocabularies. While this may be effective for some students, to others, this may seem boring and an uninteresting way to learn English vocabularies. Nowadays, memorization isn’t advised by most experts, but still can be very effective to some individuals.

So how can you learn all these words and improve your vocabularies? How can you make them stick into your long term memory? Here are some ways on how you should go about doing it.

As mentioned earlier, English learners can keep a vocabulary notebook with them whenever they come across a new word or phrase. Whenever a new word is met, simply write them all down onto your vocabulary notebook. It is more effective to list the new words in assigned categories. Then, look for their meanings in the dictionary and write a sentence using the word. Example:

Page 1: Category: Food
New vocabularies
#enchilada – Tortilla with meat filling baked in tomato sauce seasoned with chili.
“Mexicans love to make enchiladas especially during summer.”

#Kebab – Cubes of meat marinated and cooked on a skewer usually with vegetables.
“My family and I love to have kebabs in the backyard.”

You can do this using a notebook ( the traditional way ) or use a notepad on your smartphone.

Another strategy that seems to be gaining popularity on the internet is by using flashcards. English learners or language learners in general use a software called Anki to help them review the new words they have learned.

To use these vocabularies into speaking, practice using these words into dialogues by simply speaking to Native English Speakers, language partners, or you can study English with a certified English teacher. Remember that even if you know a lot of words, but if you do not use them when speaking, you could easily forget them.
